After a full life characterized by love of family and a fundamental commitment to social justice, Crystal Campbell (nee Cousins) passed away on Friday, September 13th, 2024 in the loving company of her son and daughter. A proud Brooklynite, Crystal was the daughter of the late Jesse X. and Sarah L. (Fink) Cousins. She attended the University of Chicago as a Ford Foundation Early Entrant, going on to receive her Bachelor of Arts with Highest Honors from Northeastern University. She obtained her Juris Doctor from Boston College and a Master of Laws from Harvard University. Among her many professional accomplishments, she took pride in arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court, drafting legislation supporting the reorganization of the MA Department of Mental Health, and her twelve years as an educator at Suffolk University Law School.

The breadth of Crystal’s life and interests was astonishing. Accompanied by her prior husband Edwin Campbell, her love of the sea and sailing carried her around the globe. This love eventually led them to South Dartmouth in pursuit of great sailing and quiet anchorages. A lover of art in all its manifestations, in 1993 she helped create ArtWorks!, dedicated to showcasing and promoting the arts and artists of the Greater New Bedford area. She worked tirelessly to open new paths of communication, to meet and make wonderful new friends, to create and nurture deep and vibrant communities.

But the central truth of Crystal’s life was her deep and unquestioning love of family. Her commitment to our shared values strengthened our discourse, opening our hearts and minds to new possibilities and potentials. Her commitment to education created opportunities for children and grandchildren, continuing today into the next generation. Her commitment and dedication to her family tightened bonds across this nation and overseas, ensuring that no voices went lost and unheard. She will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by each and every one of us.

Crystal is survived by her children, Sean Lloyd and his wife Sharon Elston, Jennie Kristel and her husband Michael Watson, and Linda (Campbell) Tunnicliffe and her husband Edmund Tunnicliffe IV. She was predeceased by her infant son Geoffrey Allyn Lloyd, her children Geraldine Campbell and David Campbell, and her husband, Richard Hilker. She was also the much beloved Amah to nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be private. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
