Dartmouth Farmer's Market celebrates tenth season
It all started as a conversation between neighbors.
More than 10 years ago, Tony Melli, a representative of several area farms, and Andy Pollock of Silverbrook Farms were randomly placed in side-by-side booths at the SOWA Farmer’s Market in Boston.
“(Andy) said, ‘This is silly — we’re coming all the way to Boston, and we don’t have a farmer’s market in our hometown,” said Melli.
Ten years later, the Dartmouth Farmer’s Market in Padanaram Village is flourishing, and on Friday, June 5, it will return for the tenth straight year.
Pollock handed the reigns to the market over to Melli about three years in, and since then, he’s managed it on his own, though Silverbrook still has a booth each week. Melli said a group of Dartmouth and area farms (and farmers) have been key to the success of the market, including Merrylegs Farm and Apponagansett Farm, among others.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing some of our vendors return,” said Melli, who runs a booth at the farm that features his imported Olio di Melli fine Italian olive oils and balsamic vinegars, as well as some other area farms’ products. “The nice thing about the farmer’s market is it’s a group of farmers who have been here. This will be the tenth year for almost all of the farmers. You get to know each other really well.”
“The customers get to know you, and you get to know your customers,” he added.
Locally made products like assorted cheeses, veggies, handmade crafts, soaps, coffee, freshly baked breads, pies, pastries and more are available, and local musicians perform each week at the market, something Melli has come to particularly enjoy.
“It’s become a community event,” he said, noting that the group chooses one non-profit organization to sponsor every week.
He said there will be some new vendors this year as well, including Farm to Baby, a local producer of organic, locally grown baby food.
“We’ve never had anything like that before,” he said.
The Dartmouth Farmer’s Market will be held on Rex Field at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 351 Elm Street in Padanaram Village, South Dartmouth from 1 to 6 p.m. every Friday until September 25. The market is open rain or shine. For more information, visit the Dartmouth Farmer's Market's Facebook page.
