Dartmouth High junior selected for D.C. youth summit

Mar 2, 2020

Kaylee Lemieux, a student at Dartmouth High School, has been selected to represent Dartmouth as a National Youth Delegate to the 2020 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University in June.

Lemieux joins a select group of 300 students from across the country to participate in an intensive, week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation.

The junior was chosen based on her academic accomplishments and demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in the sciences and conservation studies.

“I have been interested in the environment ever since I was a child, and knew the important role the environment plays in the healthy living of human beings,” noted Lemieux in an email. “At the summit I hope to gain skills, knowledge, and guidance that will help me to be a leader.”

Lemieux also hopes to learn about helping the environment as well as the animals at the National Smithsonian Zoo and National Aquarium. She wants to become a wildlife or emergency veterinarian.

“Doing this program really means a lot to me,” she added. “Doing this program will prepare me for personal, academic success in college and it will set me on the right path for a fulfilling and successful career.” But also participating at the summit will show me ways to help the environment.

According to a press release from George Mason University, the school and its partners, National Geographic and the National Zoo, are “excited” to welcome the nation's young scholars to Washington, D.C.

The release also stated that the Youth Summit will encourage and inspire young leaders in conservation. It will be held June 28 to July 3, 2020.
