Dartmouth High sports ready for spring season
Tryouts for Dartmouth High sports teams kicked off on March 20. Here’s what coaches have in mind for the spring season:
Boys lacrosse.
With 40 athletes at tryouts this year, Head Coach Peter Crane expects a mixture of new and returning players for the varsity team. Returning key players include Cole Jacobsen and Neal Canastra, both year-round athletes who will quickly ease into the lacrosse season, Crane said. Despite week-long tryouts that are still in session, Crane is already eyeing a postseason run.
Girls lacrosse.
Head Coach Christopher Tresca plans to redirect his team toward a collective scoring effort, as opposed to relying on a few dedicated scorers to pick up points.
Last season, the team finished with a 17-2 record and advanced as far as the quarter finals of the Div. 2 East tournament before falling to Foxboro. Tresca hopes to make postseason again this year.
Returning to the varsity team this year are senior captains Cali Andrade and Riley Piva. Vivi Estes and Lexi Viveiros will also make a return as senior defenders. Seniors Casey Good and Megan Belmonte will return as starting attackers.
Softball.
After losing three starting seniors — Sydney Silva, Elissa Petreault, and Jessica Lacombe — to graduation, Head Coach Beth Arguin is looking closely at the 31 girls trying out to step up. She’s still searching for someone to fill first base and shortstop, but she’s confident her list of returning players and new players will fill the void.
“Our number one goal is to make it into the tournament. I’d like to go as far as we can,” Arguin said. The team made it to the first round of Div. 1 South last year, but fell to Plymouth North.
Baseball.
Dartmouth High’s baseball team will return to the mound after an absence in the postseason last year. The team finished its 2016 season with a 7-13 record. The previous year, the Indians advanced as far as the Div. 2 South quarter-finals before getting knocked out by Medfield.
Boys tennis.
Head Coach Don York is excited for returning sophomore Trevor Schwarzmann, whom he credits as the best player last season. Schwarzmann took on Duxbury's Ethan Hall — a 13th seed versus fourth place matchup, respectively — in the state tournament and won.
Also returning this year are senior captain Anthony Pajak, junior Connor Alves, and senior Advika Rajapaske. York's preliminary lineup includes four seniors, five juniors, seven sophomores, and four freshmen.
Last season, Dartmouth only lost to two teams, Old Rochester and Barnstable, which concluded its 14-4 regular season record. This year, York hopes to defeat the rivals, as well as advance into the postseason.
Girls tennis.
Last year, Karina Almeida and Emily Freedman represented Dartmouth in the postseason. The two had earned a spot in the South Individual Tennis doubles tournament, but fell to Martha's Vineyard in the quarterfinals.
Sailing.
Previously a volunteer assistant coach, Peter van Colen takes over as head coach this season. Already he’s prepping for tough competition. As one of the few public schools in the region with a sailing team, Dartmouth will will take on elite private schools from Massachusetts and Rhode Island, like Tabor Academy and St. George's School. Tryouts began on March 20 with 26 aspiring sailors seeking a spot on the 24-student team.
Track.
Dartmouth High’s track teams will return with championship runs in the rearview. Caitlyn Demers and Skylar Barthelmes advanced to All-States last year, while Peter Boukhier, Brandon McNeil, and the boys relay team advanced as far as the Div. 2 State Championships.
