Dartmouth resident breaks into fishing vessel in New Bedford
Robert Bariteau, 47, of 28 Shaker Road has been charged with breaking and entering into a fishing vessel named “Miss Shauna.”
According to New Bedford police, on Aug. 26, at approximated 9:45 p.m., police were dispatched to Fish Island near the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge regarding a break in.
The owner of the vessel, who was nearby at the time, observed Bariteau breaking into one of his vessels, police said. The suspect took tools and personal property and fled on foot. The owner of the vessel, who was not identified by the New Bedford Police, chased Bariteau and cornered him at a nearby gas station.
According to police, the stolen property was then recovered, and the owner of the vessel recognized Bariteau as someone who had worked for him in the past.
Officers arrived on scene and placed Bariteau under arrest.
