A Dartmouth officer has been placed on house arrest after allegedly threatening to shoot both his wife and dog with a police-issued gun on Friday, April 7.

Sergeant Paul Medeiros, 46, of Westwood Drive, was placed on house arrest at his mother's home following a dangerousness hearing on April 10 at the Bristol County District Court, officials said. The District Attorney's Office had asked the court to order Medeiros be held in jail for 120 days as his case proceeded.

Medeiros was also ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device and told not to have any contact with anyone connected with the case. He is only allowed to leave his mother's home for doctor and legal appointments.

A restraining order issued after Friday's arrest was also extended during the hearing.

Medeiros is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and witness intimidation. A restraining order was issued following his arrest, and was extended on the April 10 hearing. His next court date will be May 10.

Dartmouth Police Chief Bob Szala said that Medeiros has been placed on administrative leave with pay. The department is investigating alongside the Massachusetts State Police, he said.

According to court documents, Medeiros' wife had called police after her husband had threatened both her and the dog on April 7.

"When I looked up [from the kitchen window], Paul was waving his gun at me through the window and at the dog. Both of them were going behind the shed. I was so scared," she said in a written statement included in court documents.

Medeiros' wife was able to flee the home with their seven-year-old daughter, but not before Medeiros became aware that the police had been called. According to court documents, Medeiros allegedly took his wife's phone and tried to hang up. His wife was able to get it back, fled without a jacket or shoes, and stayed on the line with dispatch.

Medeiros' wife did not have any visible injuries, and told police that she did not need medical attention, according to court documents.

According to a statement from police included in the court documents, the domestic abuse had allegedly been ongoing for about four years.

"She said that for the last four years or so (since Sgt. Medeiros was involved with an on-duty fatal shooting), Paul has been very abusive. [She] told me she thinks Paul may have PTSD," wrote Lieutenant Gregg Rutch.

Szala confirmed that police had been to the home for a domestic disturbance in the past.

"This is probably the second time we went to the house on a domestic," Szala said, adding that the first incident did not result in an arrest.

In her written statement, Medeiros' wife said that he has held a gun to both her head and his on more than one occasion; that he had banged her head on the couch, which resulted in extensive soft tissue damage; and that he had held her at gunpoint in the shower. According to Rutch's account, she also alleged that Medeiros has forced sexual activity, but she did not go into further detail.
