Dartmouth students advance in Destination Imagination tournament

Six teams from Dartmouth recently competed in the Destination Imagination Regional Tournament at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School on Saturday, March 12.

Three Dartmouth teams earned first place and one team returned with a third place victory. Those teams qualified to participate in the Massachusetts Destination Imagination State Tournament at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, March 26.

Destination Imagination is an international, nonprofit organization for students from kindergarten through college, which promotes creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, time and resource management and problem solving skills.

During the competition, teams must choose to solve a problem from the fields of science, the arts, improvisation, or engineering. The solution is presented in a performance before a group of judges.

Both of Dartmouth’s elementary teams earned first place. The “#Rainbrosajobo” elementary team was managed by Lynn Arruda and included Potter Elementary School students Ryan Arruda, Connor Bok, Ryan Duggan, Lexi-Bella Nicolosi, Madyn Waskiewicz and DeMello Elementary School student Braiden Norton.

“The Skiing Ewoks” elementary level team, managed by Nicole Jackman, includes DeMello Elementary School students, Jay Heller, Aiden Mello, Connor Murphy, Natalie Murphy and Quinn Elementary students Roger Jackman, Lauren Kiser and Teagan Witzig.

Dartmouth’s middle school teams successfully presented their solutions at the regional tournament. “The Snuggleborfians” team managed by Carlin Moroney, and made up of Dartmouth Middle School students Emma Amaral, Kevin Kiser, Cassidy Leary, Katie Moroney, Sergio Sao Marcos and Katelyn Sullivan solved an improvisational challenge.

“The Makeup Artists” team managed by JoAnn Bier composed of middle school students Mason Pereira and Kenzie Waskiewicz earned first place.

Dartmouth also sent one non-competitive team of students in kindergarten through second grade to the regional tournament. The “Fireball 8” team, managed by Joe Yarmac, included Potter students Zane Bendiksen, Jackson Goncalves, Jack Longo, Julian Yarmac and DeMello students Elan Martin and Lilly Sullivan.
