Dartmouth winter sports end seasons with playoff runs

Mar 13, 2022

As winter sports tournaments approach their final rounds, all six qualifying Dartmouth High and Bishop Stang sports teams have been eliminated from contention, here’s how they fared:

The Dartmouth High boys hockey team — ranked 12th in the Division II tournament to start — made one of the deepest runs of the six teams, as one of only two Dartmouth teams to play in a round of 16 game this season.

They started the tournament at home against Westwood, winning big on an overtime goal from senior forward J.C. Frates. In the round of 16, they drew a difficult matchup against Duxbury (5) and lost the game 5-1.

The Bishop Stang girls basketball team (13) was the other Dartmouth team to make the round of 16.

After starting the tournament with a bye-week in the preliminary round, the Stang girls team defeated Saugus (20) 55-30 in the round of 32. They were ultimately defeated by Rockland (4) 63-42 in the round of 16.

The Dartmouth High girls basketball team (32) won its first game against Burlington (33) 57-38 to advance past the preliminary round. But a matchup with first ranked Norwood was too much to overcome, the team losing 54-34.

The Bishop Stang boys basketball team (26) won their preliminary-round matchup against Martha’s Vineyard (39) 76-61, but fell to New Mission (7) in the round of 32 by 56-46.

Stang’s boys hockey team (9) earned a bye-week to advance past the preliminary round of its tournament but lost a heartbreaker to North Quincy (24) in the round of 32, finishing 5-4 in double overtime.

Finally, the Bishop Stang girls hockey team entered the Division I tournament in good position as the 12 seed, but narrowly lost its round-of-32 matchup to Billerica (21) 4-3.

Spring sports will be eligible to begin practicing on March 21 and include baseball, softball, sailing, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls outdoor track and field, and unified track.
