Discover winter animals at Mass Audubon hikes
Not content with sitting inside all winter? Mass Audubon is hosting several outdoor animal discovery programs this winter.
On December 1 and 15. Allens Pond will host twilight owl prowls. Both events will begin at 4:30 p.m. and run until 6:30 p.m. Programs begin at Stone Barn Farm, 786 E. Horseneck Rd.
During the event, participants will learn about and listen for native owls. A one-mile guided hike without flashlights will be offered to hear three native species which call the sanctuary home. The event is $10 for members or $12 for non-members.
Take a walk along the ocean to spot seals on December 9. The sanctuary will hold a seaside seal stoll from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Gooseberry Island in Westport. The hike will include a search for harbor and grey seals along the water’s edge. This program is suitable for families with kids ages 6 and up. The cost is $10 for members or $12 for non-members.
Search for snowy owls on January 6 and 13 at Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, 1280 Horseneck Rd. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and runs to 12 p.m. During the event, Mass Audubon staff will lead a 2.5-mile hike in search of the elusive snowy owl, which migrates to the sanctuary each year. The cost is $10 for members and $12 for non-members.
Pre-registration is required for each event. Visit massaudubon.org or call (508) 636-2437 to register. Programs have limited space and are weather-dependent.
