District 2 voters demand a $53k base pay for full-time firefighter
Dartmouth Fire District No. 2 voters approved a $676,121.65 2017 budget with little debate, other than a dispute over the salary of the district's full-time firefighter.
The position is the only full-time firefighting job in the district, aside from that of full-time Chief Tim Andre.
District No. 2 resident and call firefighter Greg Edgcomb proposed an amendment to the suggested pay of $45,144.51, saying the base pay should be $53,000 and funded via tax dollars.
“I know what I make,” said Edgcomb, a full-time firefighter on Cape Cod. “I didn’t think it was done right.”
A majority of voters approved the nearly $8,000 increase to the salary.
“My opinion is that firefighters have a value that has no price,” said Prudential Committee member Bernard Giroux, who voted for the salary increase.
Prudential Committee member Ralph Medeiros was not in favor of the change. The third Committee seat has not been filled following the resignation of member Robert Butler.
Though the will of the voters was to increase the salary, the change may not necessarily be approved by the Prudential Committee, said Anthony Savastano, attorney for the district.
“This sets the ceiling on how much [the Prudential Committee] can spend,” he explained.
Although the 2017 fiscal year starts on July 1, 2016, and budgets are finalized beforehand, the Prudential Committee can spend the allocated funds any time during the year, Savastano said.
