Friends Academy offers summer training for teachers of students with dyslexia

May 20, 2015

Friends Academy will offer a summer course in the Orton-Gillingham Reading Program to train teachers of individuals with dyslexia or reading disorders how to read.

The school’s program provides a systematic, structured and multi-sensory reading instruction geared toward the specific needs of each child.

Dawn Nieman and Maryann Chatfield will teach the 64-hour course. The class will be broken up into eight sessions, beginning August 17 through August 22. The class meets again on October 3 and 4.

Participants will cover information regarding dyslexia, phonology, handwriting instruction, basic phonics, morphology and students will learn words derived from Anglo-Saxon, Latin and Greek.

Once participants have completed this course, they may make arrangements to work on a practicum that will take place during the 2015-16 school year, and prepare them to apply to the Orton-Gillingham Academy for certification.
