Friends of the Elderly to host yard sale fundraiser

Jun 5, 2017

Dartmouth’s Friends of the Elderly are gearing up for their largest fundraiser of the year.

The Senior Center will open its doors for a massive yard sale fundraiser on June 24 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. From outside vendors to two on-site thrift shops, the event at 628 Dartmouth Street will have household items, clothing, and jewelry up for sale.

It’s the Friends of the Elderly’s biggest fundraiser of the year, according to President Maria Connor. The entirely volunteer-run organization relies on fundraisers and donations to cover the cost of services it provides to seniors.

This year, the organization plans to contribute $13,000 to match a state grant for the purchase of a new van for the Council on Aging’s social day program. Proceeds will also go towards a planned overhaul of the Senior Center, including a new driveway and entryway for the program.

In addition to the yard sale, the COA’s kitchen will also be open to serve Portuguese cuisine, including malassadas and kale soup.

Vendor tables are still available for $20, but are filling fast.

The Friends of the Elderly is also prepping for a luncheon celebrating the lives of Dartmouth seniors age 90 or older at Rachel’s Lakeside on July 16. At the luncheon, nonagenarians nominated by the community will receive honors and detail their lives.
