Girls lacrosse breaks out of early season rut

Initially marred by the bulk loss of starting seniors, the Dartmouth High’s girls lacrosse team is finally turning it around after adopting a new strategy.

“Everybody has to be on the field, make a positive play in the game, and understand for us to succeed, it has to be a collective effort,” said Head Coach Christopher Tresca. “There is no one girl on the field that’s going to win the game, but if we don’t play as a team, individuals can lose a game.”

The team had concluded its first few weeks with a 0-3-1 record. But a few wins over April vacation signaled a turnaround for the Indians.

“The start of this new direction began last week when we had a good win against Bourne, and a good overtime win against Falmouth,” said Tresca.

The April 24 loss to Apponagansett didn’t set the girls back, as the team gained a third win — 18-10 — against Bishop Stang on April 28.

“This game, we’re always up for it. Bishop Stang and Dartmouth is always a good rivalry,” Tresca said. He credited the win to a strong transitional offense and team effort. Every starter contributed either a goal or an assist.

Junior Lauren Chiquito, who scored the first of what she hopes will be many goals in her varsity career during the Bishop Stang match, can see the difference a few weeks makes.

“We’re all finally combining and working as a team. It’s been really great,” she said.

The Indians continued the winning streak on May 1, when they secured a 9-8 win in overtime against New Bedford High School.

Tresca’s still aiming for improvement, however. He’s tightening up passing and catching techniques to ensure flawless connections, and improving defense to cut down on one-versus-one confrontations, especially with the tough lineup upcoming over the next few weeks.
