Handicapped woman, two others rescued from house fire
Firefighters helped three persons, including a wheel-chair bound woman, escape a burning home on Rosewood Terrace on March 22.
District No. 1 firefighters responded to 25 Rosewood Terrace around 12:13 p.m., after homeowner Ana Araujo, her son Abel and her 92-year-old handicapped mother Ilda Alvernaz had been safely escorted out of the burning home, officials said.
Fire Captain Timothy Lancaster was coincidentally working nearby, and was able to escort the woman out of the home and across the street with the help of neighbors. Responders arrived shortly afterward with equipment, officials said.
Fire Chief Brad Ellis said the left side of the house was fully engulfed, but that it didn’t take crews long to extinguish it.
“Once we got water on it, within five minutes the exterior fire was knocked down,” Ellis said.
The fire was contained to an exterior wall, but crews tore down walls to make sure it wouldn't reignite. They remained on scene until about 2 p.m.
The cause is still under investigation, but Ellis suspects a clogged wood pellet stove flue is to blame. Ellis advises those with wood pellet stoves or chimneys to have a professional chimney sweep clean them annually.
There were no reported injuries. The home is assessed at $305,900. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
