Here's what the Dartmouth Police will be presenting at the next Select Board meeting
The Dartmouth Police will present next steps for the police department headquarters at the Select Board meeting on August 8.
After a vote that would have allowed the town to renovate the existing police station failed at Spring Town Meeting, the Select Board asked Police Chief Robert Szala to come up with a new plan that could be presented to voters in the form of a ballot question at the general election in November 2016.
However, Szala, Town Administrator David Cressman, and an Advisory Board charged with assisting Szala in creating the proposal agreed that that would be too soon.
"A consensus was reached to move this ballot question to the annual town election in April 2017 so a more comprehensive plan could be developed," Dartmouth Detective Kyle Costa said in a press release.
Advisory Board members are currently considering the need for a new location, how much it will cost, and how willing town residents are to invest in such a project. Possible locations include town-owned and privately-owned land within the Route 6 corridor, which services the highest call volume.
"Chief Szala is committed to finding a safe, healthy and efficient work environment for the Police Department now and into the future," said Costa, adding that Szala will continue to inform the town residents and the Select Board in open, public meetings.
The August 8 presentation to the Select Board will include the merits of a new building study and the possibility of requesting a quote for an approved architect.
"This effort would allow for a parallel tract in supporting a next phase of the project in preparation for Town Meeting in October 2016," said Costa. Town Meeting will have to approve the proposal before it is placed on an election ballot.
The Advisory Board includes Dartmouth Board of Assessors' Chairman Robert Michaud, Planning Board Clerk Lorri-Ann Miller, John Quinn, Lara Stone, Finance Committee Chair David Tatelbaum, Kenneth Vincent and Project Manager Richard Pomroy.
