Jacob Miller gives leadership tips at Rotary Club meeting
Jacob Miller knows how to get things done.
The 2016 University of Massachusetts Dartmouth graduate, former Student Trustee, and founder of several on and off-campus organizations spoke to the Dartmouth Rotary Club on April 6 about what leadership means and how to do it.
Miller talked about his very first experience leading a group and driving change. He took on his elementary school, organizing a protest and petition with his peers, to bring back coffee milk after the school decided to limit options to chocolate or skim. Through their efforts, the school reversed its decision.
In another example, Miller realized his college peers were being kicked off of MassHealth for health insurance, costing students thousands of dollars because they were required to sign up for the university’s plan. He worked with his mentor, state Senator Mark Montigny, to pass a bill preventing that.
“One person and one group got around one idea, and it actually changed thousands of people’s lives,” Miller recalled.
Miller isn’t afraid to engage with everyone, even people and groups he might be at odds with. He’d spoken to a founder of the Tea Party and walked away agreeing with the group’s stance on prison reform.
When setting a goal, don’t settle for anything less, Miller said. While change happens slowly, having a big and bold vision helps. And don’t be afraid to be the one to start something new, he added.
“Be like Benjamin Franklin. He started everything,” Miller said.
