Joseph S. "Popeye" Pires, 76

Joseph S. "Popeye" Pires, 76 of Dartmouth, died Friday, January 11, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital following a period of declining health.

He was born in New Bedford, the son of the late Severino and Luiza P. (Soares) Pires.

He resided most of his life in the New Bedford, Dartmouth area. He was formerly employed as a truck driver for many years and was also a longshoreman.

He was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. His many decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign with device 1960.

In his leisure time he enjoyed the company of his motorcycle companions; he loved animals and enjoyed anytime he could spend with family and friends especially the time he spent with his daughter Kaylyn.

Survivors include his daughter: Kaylyn Pires of Acushnet and Kaylyn's mother Rene' Carr and Rene's son Rayford. He also raised Kim and Lisa daughters of his former spouse; 2 sisters: Linda L. Gray and her husband George and Brenda L. Pires all of Dartmouth; 4 children he considered to be grandchildren; 1 niece, 1 nephew and 2 great nephews.

His committal service with military honors will be conducted in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 11:15 A.M. The funeral cortege will depart from the funeral home parking lot at 10:15 A.M.
