Julio Gomes, 89, of Dartmouth died peacefully December 21, 2024 at a rehabilitation nursing facility after battling long illnesses.
He was the husband of the late Angelina (Soares) Gomes and son of the late Francisco Gomes and Ana (Lobo) Gomes.
He was born in Brava, Cape Verde and came to the USA in 1959 where he married, obtained his citizenship and worked for Harold Bosworth as a carpenter, mainly on the Cape and Islands. He then started his own small building and remodeling business in the Greater New Bedford area.
He was an avid fisherman and artist, which both remained his passions throughout his life.
He was also a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church and member of the Bisca Tournament Club in New Bedford.
Survivors include his daughter, Jacqueline Gomes of Dartmouth; his brother, Jose Gomes of Dartmouth; and his sisters, Maria Gomes of Dartmouth and Eugenia Pfeffier of New Bedford. He is also survived by siblings, Jean Pierre Gomes of New Bedford, and Michel Gomes, Diolinda (Elisabeth) Gomes, and Marie Lopes, all of San Antonio, Texas; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Julio Do Couto.
His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 11:30am at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
