Land trust events for early fall

Sep 18, 2019

Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust will be kicking off a new collaboration with UMass Dartmouth biology professor and Director of the Beecology Project Dr. Robert Gegear by hosting two free pollinator-themed events.

On Thursday, September 26, Dr. Gegear will lead a discussion on the worldwide decline of pollinators, what that means for food security, and what residents can do to help protect and restore native pollination systems and biodiversity in their own backyards.

The discussion will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at DNRT’s headquarters at Helfand Farm, 318 Chase Road.

On Saturday, September 28, all are welcome to attend a follow-up “bee walk” starting at 10 a.m. from the Helfand Farm headquarters.

Participants will learn about bee identification and then head outside to practice their skills, observing the variety of bees at DNRT and which plants attract them.

Both events are free, but registration is required. For more information or to register for either event, call (508) 991-2289 or visit dnrt.org.

On Monday, October 14, DNRT joins with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra to provide trail music at Slocum’s River Reserve, 320 Horseneck Rd. from 3 to 4 p.m.

Musicians Peter Zay and EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks will play violin and cello out in the open at Angelica’s Overlook. Participants can bring a blanket or lawn chair and drinks and snacks to enjoy an informal performance of music from Beethoven to ragtime to Disney classics and maybe even a fiddle tune or two.

The cost is $10 per carload. Space is limited, so please register at dnrt.org/event/trailmusic/.
