Learn why animal pounds were first started with Dartmouth Historical & Arts Society

May 9, 2016

Bob Harding will take local history buffs on a review of animal pounds in Olde Dartmouth. Animal pounds were in use in old England as early as the 10th Century and came to Plymouth Colony with the earliest settlers. They're interconnected with property law and liability concepts, and even foreshadowed the great American interest in pets and animal welfare. Learn why impounding animals was essential, when the idea of impounding strays began, where you can find old pounds in Dartmouth, and how were they made.
