Lloyd Center to host seal cruises

Jan 24, 2017

The Lloyd Center for the Environment will sponsor a seal cruise around Cuttyhunk Island on March 11 and 25.

Lloyd Center Education Specialist, Jasmine Smith-Gillen, will provide commentary about these creatures, which tend to haul out at low tide along a sandbar between Cuttyhunk and Penikese islands. Harbor, grey, and harp seals are commonly encountered species, although sightings of wintering water-birds on the boat ride out and near the islands can also be expected.

After seal viewing, the boat will dock at Cuttyhunk for lunch, and there will be an opportunity for participants to venture through town. Beachcombers are welcome to join Smith-Gillen on a nature walk along the shore. Bring binoculars, camera, and appropriate clothing (layers, wind gear, hiking shoes).

This program will take place on Saturday, March 11 and Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Participants are to meet at the Cuttyhunk Ferry Company parking lot located on the State Pier in New Bedford no later than 9:45 a.m. for check-in. The boat leaves at 10 a.m. sharp. Visit www.cuttyhunkferryco.com for directions.

The cost of the Cuttyhunk Seal Cruise is $43 for Lloyd Center members, $45 for non-members, and $20 for children. Prices include lunch — to be served on the boat — and a packet of background materials. The vessel has a cash only snack bar, and there is limited shopping available on Cuttyhunk Island. Space is limited to 30.

To register for this event, call the Lloyd Center Event Line (508) 558-2918, or visit www.lloydcenter.org to register online. Registration deadlines are Thursday, March 9 and March 23 at 4 p.m. Contact Jasmine at jasmine@lloydcenter.org or (508) 990-0505, ext. 13., with questions.
