Lloyd Center to host seal cruises
The Lloyd Center will host its annual seal cruise to Cuttyhunk Island on March 10, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
The event features an opportunity to observe overwintering marine wildlife which uses Buzzards Bay as a stopover location. A small sandbar called “Gull Island” is situated along the Elizabeth Island chain between Cuttyhunk and Penikese, where seals haul out at low tide.
With peak activity in February, harbor, grey, and harp seals may be present, and Lloyd Center staff will provide commentary about these creatures. Views of wintering waterbirds on the boat ride out and at Gull Island can also be expected.
After seal viewing, the boat will dock at Cuttyhunk for lunch and an opportunity to set foot on the island. Participants will be free to venture through town to the lookout, gaining a feel for the landscape and enjoy the views of the surrounding waters. Beachcombers may join staff members on a nature walk along the shore.
The price is $43 for members, $53 for non-members, and $20 for children. Pre-registration by March 8 at 4 p.m. To pre-register, visit lloydcenter.org. For questions about the program, call Jamie Bogart at (508) 990-0505 x 23 or email jbogart@lloydcenter.org.
A seal cruise is also scheduled for March 24 at the same times. To attend the March 24 seal cruise, pre-registration must be made by March 22.
Those attending are asked to arrive at the Cuttyhunk Ferry Company parking lot on State Pier in New Bedford no later than 9:45 a.m. The boat is scheduled to leave at 10 a.m. sharp.
