Lloyd Center to host Woodcock Walk

Mar 1, 2017

Lloyd Center Research Associate Jamie Bogart will lead a Spring Woodcock Walk on March 28 from 6-8 p.m. at the Noquochoke Wildlife Management Area, located on Hixville Road.

The event will include an hour of searching for other bird activity before dusk. Then, participants will listen and look for the American woodcock, Scolopax minor. Its courtship flights begin around that time, and signal a true sign that spring has arrived. After woodcock activity subsides, the event will focus on searching for owls.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife is managing the species at the management area, a known woodcock staging area.

The cost of the trip is $8 for Lloyd Center members and $10 for non-members. Pre-registration by March 28 at 12 p.m. is required, and space is limited to 20. A weather date of March 29 is scheduled.
