Local kids scramble for Dartmouth Easter Egg Hunt

It was a mad scramble in the sunshine this year during the annual Dartmouth Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday morning at Apponagansett Park.

Courtney Hayes brought her son Nolan, 5, for his first egg hunt at the seaside playground on Gulf Road.

She commented: “I think it’s a beautiful day, and the kids seem to be having fun. No injuries. I’m a nurse, so we’re always worried about injuries. But I just think it’s an awesome thing to do for the kids, right, to get them all excited for the season.”

She and her family have lived in Dartmouth for three years, and they’ve just bought a house.

“We’re moving to a different area of Dartmouth, but I’m so excited we still get to stay in Dartmouth,” she said.

Harris Laliberte, 3, also attended his first-ever Easter egg hunt at the park.

“It’s nice that the town offers this,” said Harris’ dad Chris. “He’s having a great time,” added his mother Rebecca.

Recreation Coordinator Becky Amaral has been working at the Dartmouth Parks and Recreation department for the past 21 years — and she has helped run the Easter Egg Hunt ever since it started nine years ago.

This year it took her around 12 hours to fill all of the 2,000 eggs used during the event.

“The first year we did it, they all broke open,” she remembered with a grimace. “So we tape them shut.”

But Amaral clearly loves the work.

“We like to give back to the community, instead of you know, having to pay for everything. It’s nice to offer free programs,” she said.

She went on to say that out of all the previous egg hunts, this past Sunday’s was the nicest.

“This was the best weather we’ve ever had,” Amaral said. “It was a perfect day.”
