Magician brings laughs, tricks to dog park fundraiser
Margo Rasteiro can make a handkerchief disappear. The eight year old was inspired to learn magic by the Harry Potter series, but was beyond excited when magician Matt Roberts summoned her on stage to make an egg disappear.
Rasteiro was just one of more than 100 at the April 9 show, hosted as a fundraiser for the Dartmouth Dog Advisory Work Group (DDAWG)’s project to bring an off-leash dog park to town.
Roberts’ routine included balancing Dylan Rasteiro, 4, on a seemingly floating pair of broomsticks; escaping from a straight jacket combined with a card trick, and balloon and card illusions. He also premiered a new trick — inspired by theatre lighting — in which a “magic” set of light bulbs and buttons that switched colors.
“I pick from my repertoire a variety of tricks for the 80-minute show,” Roberts explained before he headed on stage.
He also paused occasionally to break down some, but not all, of his tricks. He held up his "magic" cardboard domino, which appeared to change as he flipped the cardboard from side to side. He used his hand to cover different black dots each time he flipped hte card, relying on a psychological trick to make the illusion work.
“We’re so used to seeing dominoes, our minds fill in the blanks,” he explained after wowing the audience with the seemingly changing card.
DDAWG President Diane Camacho will use proceeds from the show for the next steps of the planned dog park at Dartmouth Regional Parks and Trails on Old Fall River Road. The site within the park was cleared of trees in March, and the group is working to remove leftover stumps and level the area.
The group is also running a Yankee Candle fundraiser in the meantime. For more information about DDAWG and its fundraisers, visit dartmouthdogpark.org.
