Marcelino Gomes, 90

Marcelino P. Gomes, age 90, of Dartmouth, passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital following a period of declining health. He was the husband of Domingas (Ferreira) Gomes with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.

Born in Brava, Cape Verde, a son of the late Pedro and Maria Gomes, he had resided in Dartmouth for the past 51 years.

Mr. Gomes proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He had a successful career as a Merchant Marine and talented executive steward working for Exxon Standard Oil Company for over 40 years until his retirement.

Mr. Gomes had a fantastic sense of humor. He was an excellent cook, loved music, all aspects of the ocean including fishing and watching Portuguese novellas. He took great pride and joy helping to raise his loving grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Melissa Harrision and husband Chris; two grandchildren, Brienna and Collin Harrison all of Lakeville; a brother, John P. Gomes and wife Eugenia of Acushnet; four sisters, Clara DaSilva and husband Henry, Alice Barros and husband Edward all of New Bedford, Laura Bala and husband Mario of Acushnet and Eugenia Correia of Boston; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Gomes and Maria DaVeiga; two brothers-in-law, Tony P. Ferreira and wife Liz and Tony H. Ferreira all of New Bedford; five godchildren and many generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Jose Gomes.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 2 at 10 a.m. from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Road. A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Road.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Bedford.
