Mattapoisett students get their hands dirty at Dartmouth YMCA farm

It may be early in the school year, but that didn’t stop a group of Mattapoisett students from getting their hands dirty at the Dartmouth YMCA.

On September 25, 76 sixth grade students at Mattapoisett’s Old Hammondtown School pitched in to help out at the Dartmouth YMCA’s Sharing the Harvest Community Farm. The volunteer-staffed farm grows and distributes fresh food to local food banks and agencies.

Students processed thousands of pounds of butternut squash, prepared seedling trays, planted garlic for next year's harvest, and unearthed sweet potatoes.

Students worked diligently and enthusiastically despite the rain, leaving bushels of freshly-harvested food behind.

"This was a great experience to prepare for our new Social Studies frameworks, which challenge students to think about how agriculture and food surpluses enable civilizations to advance, and it was a lot of fun to quite literally get our hands dirty!" saidSara Jacobsen, a sixth grade six teacher.

The field trip was organized by the Old Hammondtown PTO.
