Memorial planned for former Gidley School

Jan 12, 2017

Those with a connection to the shuttered Gidley Elementary School will have the opportunity to say a final goodbye to the building at a ceremony planned for February.

The building, located at 1390 Tucker Road, served as an elementary school in Dartmouth from 1922 until its closure in 2007. It has remained vacant since then, and is scheduled to be demolished in the coming months. It is currently set as the future home of a Dartmouth Police headquarters.

Ahead of the demolition, a recognition of the building and its history is scheduled for February 13, 6-7 p.m., at Quinn Elementary. The event will feature guest speakers and an opportunity for former classmates and teachers to reunite and share their memories of the school.

School Committee Chair Christopher Oliver took the lead on organizing the event after Town Administrator David Cressman received word that there was demand for it, Oliver said. Former teachers, students, administrators, and staff are all invited to attend.

Those with artifacts, photos, or mementos can email Oliver at chrisoliver@dartmouthschools.org for inclusion, or for more information.
