Men strut their stuff for Habitat for Humanity
The UMass Dartmouth chapter of sorority Alpha Sigma Tau crowned their very first “Anchorman” on Feb. 20 as they raised over $300 for Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat for Humanity is an international organization aimed at building homes for people in need.
The donations from the Alpha Sigma Tau “Male Pageant” will help families “break the cycle of poverty and build long-term financial security.” The pageant was an event akin to the annual “Mr. Dartmouth” pageant at Dartmouth High School.
“I just thought that it would be a fun and easy way to raise money,” said member Holli Lewis, who first came up with the idea for a male pageant.
The 11 males competing for the title of “Anchorman,” had to participate in a variety of pageant-like activities, earning points depending on the level of difficulty, while also being awarded style points.
“My favorite part was the push-up contest,” said Vice President of Finance Amanda Meli.
The men had to hula-hoop, give their escorts makeovers and put their music memory to the test as they finished the line to popular songs including “Barbie Girl” and “Hit Me Baby.”
Ultimately, the crowd’s favorite challenge was the pick-up line event, where the men were given the opportunity to impress co-hosts Cali Manzello and Chelsea Correia.
“It was such a blast being up there with Cali and the girls,” said Correia. “We were nervous at first, but everyone ended up having a lot of fun.”
She hopes it will become a really successful fundraiser for the sorority every year.
“It was really fun getting to work with all of the guys,” said Manzello. “They were so willing to put on a fun show that it made being a host for them so easy.”
She said that the challenges were unique because, rather than forcing guys into a beauty pageant, they really got a chance to shine as their goofy selves.
“I would love to put on another show like this with my sisters,” said Manzello. “It was endless fun.”
Out of the 11 UMass males, ultimately, sophomore Chris Lunn was crowned Anchorman, and Josh Suazo and John Ferguson followed closely behind.
“The competition was great,” said Lunn. “The people who went said it was well worth the $5 and I’d definitely participate again.”
“For our first time holding an event like this, I think it was extremely successful,” said member Alexis Shostek. “It could not have happened without the hard work and preparation done by Amanda Meli and the whole fundraising committee.”
A few of the girls even plan on heading down to Durham, North Carolina during spring break to help the Habitat build a house.
“It only goes up from here,” said sorority President Amanda Morini.
