All those who are fascinated by owls or enjoy a New England winter morning before sunrise are invited to join the Lloyd Center for the Environment’s Mid-winter owl prowl on February 2 during the hours of peak owl activity, from 3:30 to 8 a.m.

Owls become more vocal as they establish nesting territories across an otherwise quiet winter landscape. Screech, great horned, and barred owls can all be encountered in the Dartmouth woods.

Lloyd Center Research Associate Jamie Bogart will lead the prowl on the Lloyd Center property and other local stops.

Participants will venture onto woodland trails to try to attract, hear, and see owls before closing out the walk with a sunrise at Gooseberry Island and a visit to Horseneck Beach, a prime location to view snowy owls.

Afterwards they will warm up with some coffee back at the Lloyd Center and meet Koko, the Center’s resident screech owl, since seeing a wild owl is not guaranteed.

Participants should bring binoculars, camera, and flashlight, and wear footwear for light walking on forest trails.

The prowl will be postponed for stormy weather or excessively windy conditions. Inclement weather date is Sunday, February 9.

Willingness to carpool is much appreciated. Participants will meet in the lower parking lot of the Lloyd Center’s Hardscrabble Nature Preserve located at 430 Potomska Road in Dartmouth.

This event is $15 for Lloyd Center members, and $20 for non-members.

Pre-registration is required by Friday, January 31 at 3 p.m. Space is limited to 20 participants.

This event is suitable for ages 15 and older. Contact Jamie Bogart at (508) 990-0505 x 23 or jbogart@lloydcenter.org with any questions.
