Mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus collected in Dartmouth

Aug 14, 2018

West Nile Virus was detected in mosquitoes collected in Dartmouth on August 14 for the first time this year.

The mosquitos carrying the virus were collected between Slocum Road and the New Bedford line, but mosquitoes carrying the virus could be present elsewhere in town. The disease reoccurs each year when mosquitoes pick up the virus from infected birds.

The risk of infection is very low, but a small number of people, especially the elderly, develop more serious illnesses when bitten by a virus-carrying mosquito.

The Dartmouth Board of Health suggests avoiding mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves, pants, and socks when outdoors, and using insect repellent. Peak mosquito hours are from dusk to dawn.

The Board of Health also recommends mosquito-proofing homes by draining standing water where mosquitoes can breed, and by installing or repairing window and door screens.
