A New Bedford man was arrested in Dartmouth on drugs and motor vehicle charges after reportedly driving erratically, according to police.

Dartmouth police stated that Derren Almeida, 32, of Campbell Street, New Bedford was arrested on May 11 near the former Sears Automotive on State Road after an officer saw him driving a 2005 Honda Pilot erratically on Route 6.

The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Fall River, according to a statement from the police department.

Police said Almeida fled from officers and attempted to hide behind a large tree before he was taken into custody.

According to the statement, police found around 100 grams of suspected fentanyl and around 40 grams of suspected cocaine in his possession.

Almeida was charged with fentanyl and cocaine trafficking along with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, operating with a suspended license (subsequent offense), and speeding.

In addition, Almeida also had four outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Dartmouth Chief of Police Brian Levesque said that he “could not be prouder” of his officers and communications personnel.

“As a result of this coordinated effort, both a dangerous individual and a large quantity of deadly narcotics were taken out of circulation, thus making the streets a bit safer, while also possibly saving countless lives,” he noted.
