No contested races for town election this year

Feb 25, 2020

There will be no challengers for any town position up for election this year, according to Dartmouth Town Clerk Lynn Medeiros.

Would-be Select Board candidate Joe Lemieux is no longer in the running for a seat in town government, as Medeiros said the nomination papers he turned in on February 18 did not have the required number of certified signatures.

Select Board chair Stanley Mickelson is now running unopposed for his third term on the board.

On the School Committee, former DeMello PTO President Mary Waite will run for the empty seat left by Carol Karafotis, who will not seek re-election.

Karafotis — a veteran Dartmouth educator who once served as principal at Gidley and Quinn Elementary Schools — has said that she wants to give someone else a chance to serve.

School Committee Chair Kathleen Amaral, however, is running for re-election for a second term on the committee.

Planning Board member Kevin Melo has also pulled nomination papers to run for re-election.

Robert Michaud is running for re-election to the Board of Assessors, Thomas Hardman for re-election to the Board of Health, Sherri L. Tetrault for re-election to Parks and Recreation, and Suzanne McDonald for re-election to the Board of Library Trustees.

Board of Library Trustees member Wendy Garf-Lipp will not be running for re-election, leaving her empty seat open for whomever wins the write-in votes.

The annual town election is April 7.

Residents can register to vote in the town election until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18.
