Plenty of sweets at Fire District 1 trunk-or-treat

Halloween came early to Padanaram Village as costumed kids collected candy at the Bridge Street fire station Saturday evening for Fire District 1’s annual trunk-or-treat.

The event, held in collaboration with the town’s Department of Parks and Recreation, saw a number of decorated vehicles from firefighters, town employees, and residents who passed out treats to let kids get a head start on their holiday stockpiles.

“A great crowd and a great night,”  said Deputy Fire Chief Jake Bettencourt.

While the fire department provided the space, Bettencourt gave much of the event’s credit to Recreation coordinator Becky Amaral

“They do such a great job,” he said. “It’s a wonderful tie-in.”

Amaral said it wasn’t that hard to get her to continue the support, as it allows her to be creative with her trunk. This year, it was themed after Harry Potter, one of her favorite franchises.

“I actually started to do some research in the summer,” she noted.

Other trunks included spooky skeletons, two Charlie Brown “Great Pumpkin” signs, a medieval castle, and a firefighting jack-o-lantern.

Along with stopping by the decorated vehicles, kids also got the chance to check out the fire station’s garage, enjoy some hot chocolate and meet “Sparky the Fire Dog” (who under the costume was Fire Chief Peter Andrade).

“Everyone else looked busy so I did it,” Andrade said. “Plus it's fun for the kids.”

Still, the biggest draw of the evening was the candy, every kid agreed.

“The dentists will be thrilled,” Bettencourt said with a laugh.
