Dartmouth police are investigating an alleged anti-semitic incident that occurred at New York Bagel on State Road on the night of January 14.

A parking sign from A & A Jewelers across the road was modified to read “A Jew Park” and placed in the bakery’s parking lot, according to New York Bagel co-owner Steve Ginsberg, who posted about the incident on his Facebook page on January 15.

Dartmouth Police Detective Kyle Costa said that the investigation is still “open and ongoing.”

“It was an isolated incident,” said Costa. “Obviously we’re very disheartened by the fact that somebody did that in town...We consider it a random and senseless act at this point in time.”

“I have lived in this area for over 30 years and am saddened and disgusted that this type of anti-semitic behavior is still part of our every day life,” stated Ginsberg in his public Facebook post.

The post sparked an outpouring of support from the community, with hundreds of comments containing messages condemning the action.

Costa noted that there was no video footage of the incident available.

“Whether it was just a random act, or a sign of the times, it was senseless,” Costa said.
