A pair of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth professors have been released from custody at Logan International Airport after being held as a result of President Donald Trump’s immigration ban.

According to a petition filed in Boston Federal District Court by the American Civil Liberties Union late Saturday night, Mazdak Pourabdollah Tootkaboni and Arghavan Louhghalam – both engineering professors at the university – landed at Logan at 5:30 p.m. on January 28. The petition alleges both were immediately detained. The professors were attending an academic conference in Paris, according to a written statement from the university.

The petition states the professors were detained as a result of President Trump’s executive order banning those from seven countries - Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Somalia - from entering the United States for 90 days. The order, signed by President Trump on January 27, includes holders of United States green cards and visas, and permanent residents of the United States traveling abroad at the time the order was issued.

Both professors are lawful permanent United States residents, according to the petition, are Iranian nationals and are Muslim.

On January 29, United States District Judge Allison D. Burroughs and and Magistrate Judge Judith G. Dein issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting the government from detaining or removing refugees with approved applications, holders of valid immigrant and non-immigrant visas, lawful permanent residents, and other individuals from the affected countries who would have been able to enter the United States legally prior to the order being issued, according to court documents.

In a written statement, Interim Chancellor Peyton R. Helm and Provost Mohammad Karim stated university officials worked throughout the evening and early morning to ensure the professors’ safe release, involving federal authorities and local elected officials. The American Civil Liberties Union also became involved. The officials also criticized the executive order in the statement.

“We want to be clear that we believe the executive order does nothing to make our country safer and represents a shameful ignorance of and indifference to the values that have traditionally made America a beacon of liberty and hope,” the statement read.
