Quinn Elementary librarian honored by state

Mar 26, 2016

The Massachusetts School Library Association has named Kate Powers, school librarian at Quinn Elementary School, as a recipient of the 2016 President’s Award.

This award honors an association member who in a career of five years or fewer has made a significant contribution to student learning through a strong school library program.

Powers has made an impact as school librarian in her two years at Quinn Elementary. She brought the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge to the school, which resulted in a first place win for Quinn in Massachusetts with a total of 474,855 minutes logged from May to September.

Powers has presented at state conferences such as her well attended presentation “Swimming Lessons in the Deep End: Social Media in the Elementary School Library” at the association’s spring 2015 conference. She recently received a $3,000 grant from MassCUE for iPads in the library, and will attend the Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute this summer.

The awards ceremony is at UMass Amherst on Saturday, April 30.
