Quinn readers are the top in the state for the fifth year in a row
Quinn Elementary School students were busy this past summer racking up reading minutes — and earned enough to win the title of top readers in the state.
Overall, Quinn students logged exactly 1,357,407 reading minutes in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. It was enough to earn the school the title of the top readers in Massachusetts.
The program encourages students to read over summer vacation to keep their reading skills up when school is not in session. The program ran from May 6 to September 6.
“We’ve been doing this for five years and every year we place the top in the state,” Quinn librarian Kate Powers told a group of top winners at a special ceremony on November 8.
The top readers in each grade level were presented with citations from Governor Charlie Baker and First Lady Lauren Baker to honor their achievement.
The top reader in the entire school was fifth grader Sienna DaSilva, who logged a total of 38,888 minutes over the summer.
DaSilva’s favorite book she read as part of the challenge was Roller Girl. The children's graphic novel tells the story of a young girl who begins playing roller derby.
“It’s about a girl who’s different and who doesn’t start out as the best,” DaSilva said.
After a private ceremony for the top readers in each grade level, an all-school assembly recognized every student’s accomplishment in making the award possible.
“This is your fifth year in a row winning,” said Brooke Shea, a field representative for Scholastic Book Fair. “There’s another way to look at the number five is that your school came in fifth in the entire country.”
