Ride set to raise funds for troops
Get ready to whip out those checkbooks, rev your engine and pop in some earplugs because the Minuteman Harley Owners Group will host its second annual fundraiser for Home For Our Troops.
The event is set for Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Minuteman Harley Davidson on State Road. The day’s activities include opening ceremonies, a partial police escort and food from Texas Roadhouse, Pub 99, Not Your Average Joes, Scotties Pub, Buffalo Wild Wings and more.
A nonprofit, Homes For Our Troops builds modified adaptive housing for veterans that have sustained severe combat related injuries post Sept. 11, 2001. The homes are given mortgage free.
“We are a group of Harley Davidson motorcycle owners that enjoy the camaraderie that comes with riding and caring for one another, as well as helping those in need,” said Jim Picanzo, event coordinator.
Registration is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on the day of the event. The cost is $20 per person and is open to all motorcyclists, not just those who ride Harley Davidsons.
Dartmouth chapter Director Claude Gelinas said the Minuteman Harley Owners Group has more than 100 members and offers support to other charitable causes.
According to Gelinas, approximately 400 people attended last year. The group raised $9,283 for Homes For Our Troops.
“Harley groups support a lot of charities. There are a lot of charity rides,” said Gelinas. “We chose Home For Our Troops last year because we thought it was a worthwhile cause. It would be difficult to imagine a young soldier coming back who’s maimed and trying to figure out how he’s going to make a living, how he’s going to support a family.”
Gelinas said that his group is directing the money to a house being built for a returning veteran in New Bedford. He said the homes are built to accommodate the injury the soldier has sustained.
The ride starts and stops at Minutemen Harley Davidson and will wind through town on Fisher Road, Horseneck Road, Old County Road and other streets.
Gelinas said that motorcyclists don’t need to be affiliated with any club around the area to join in during the event.
“We encourage people to grab a lawn chair and enjoy as the bikes travel on,” said Gelinas.
The ride leaves the dealership at 11:30 a.m and will return at 1 p.m.
The sponsoring dealership for the fundraiser is Minuteman Harley Davidson.
