Robert W. Matte, 87, of Dartmouth passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford on April 11.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Iren Lagasse Matte and Charles Eugene Matte; nieces Leslie Baxendale, Lynn Baxendale Cox, and Charlene Baxendale.

He is survived by his sister, Juliette Baxendale in Farmington, New York; nieces Mary Hawley in Naples, New York, and Sharon Ferber in Callicoon Center, New York; and nephews Jeffery Baxendale in Prattsburgh, New York and Peter Baxendale in Victor, New York.

Robert was a graduate of Admiral Billard Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, after which he became a ship engineer.

He was employed at the Philip A. Hunt Chemical Company and later became the owner and grower at Matte Orchards and Vineyard on Faunce Corner Road in Dartmouth for many years.

Robert will be sadly missed by family and friends.
