Robotic Grocer

Stop and Shop on Faunce Corner Road has a new employee, but it’s not human.

“Marty,” a towering gray robot with oversized googly eyes, is now surveilling the store floor to identify hazards.

According to a release by Marty’s manufacturers, Retail Business Services and Badger Technologies, the bot is designed to look for hazards like spills and report them to (human) coworkers. It can also scan shelves for information like products that might be misplaced, out of stock, or incorrectly priced.

The robots are working at nearly 500 Stop and Shop, Giant Martin’s, and Giant Food Stores, all of which are owned by parent company Ahold Delhaize USA. According to a representative, the robot roll-out is still in the pilot stage.

Reactions from customers have been mixed.

“I think they keep taking more and more jobs from the people,” said Linda Pepin.

Another customer was more optimistic.

“It’s a good idea,” said Fernando Giraldo. “I’ve never heard of it.”
