Rotary Club recognizes star community members

The Dartmouth Rotary Club convened on January 19 with neighboring clubs to celebrate star community members.

Member Jane Carreiro first introduced the idea to honor community members who bring "energy, enterprise, and guidance" to their respective towns, but who don't necessarily get recognition for it.

The Rotarians honored Detective Kyle Costa for his work with the holiday videos and crazy clown PSA, and for his further engagement with the community via the Dartmouth Police Department's Facebook page.

"We kind of forget who it is that really helps us out behind the scenes, and who really protects us," said chapter President Cyndi Marland before presenting the award to Costa.

"It's hard, in all honesty, to accept an award for something you do on a daily basis and you enjoy doing," said Costa, adding that he was both "humbled and honored."

"Try to remember me for the bad guys, and not the clowns," Costa added, stressing that keeping the town safe is his number one priority, not making parodies.

The Fairhaven and Fall River clubs were also represented, and they too recognized star community members. Former Fairhaven chapter president Ivan Brito recognized the current president Melissa Kucharski, while the Fall River chapter's Charlene Jarest recognized Roger Cabral. The New Bedford chapter was also invited, but unable to attend.

The Dartmouth organization also inducted community members John R. Beauregard, of the Sylvia Group, and Amy Ferguson, of the New Bedford Public Library.
