Round Hill Beach upgrade designs unveiled

Feb 22, 2017

The Parks Department has its hands full as it will try to make updates at Round Hill Beach before its June opening, as well as install a new electronic beach sticker program.

The department released a first look at restroom upgrades via its Facebook page on February 21. The current restrooms were built in the 1970s, and although renovations were done in the ‘90s, the capacity was not upgraded to handle growing popularity at the beach.

"It was a little tricky, but we doubled the number of toilets in the building with its existing footprint," Lancaster said, explaining that the the building’s footprint could not be expanded due to its location near the water.

Town Meeting voters approved $220,000 for the project in October. Currently, Lancaster is working to finalize and send out bid requests for construction. If the department receives a favorable bid, construction should begin in the spring and wrap up just before the official opening of town beaches in June, Lancaster said.

In the past 15 years, the number of season beach passes sold has doubled, totaling more than 4,000 for the town’s three beaches. That number does not accurately reflect the full number of patrons, as it does not include day passes or cars carrying multiple people.

The department is working to unroll an electronic beach sticker program that would help the department increase revenue, control beach traffic, and decrease parking space turnover for residents who pay for valid beach stickers, officials said.

After facing several beach sticker thefts last summer, the department hopes to arm staff with handheld readers that would scan either barcodes or chips in a sticker to ensure its validity. The new stickers would also give the department the flexibility to revoke stickers from residents who violate beach rules.

Lancaster hopes to unveil more details about the stickers in coming weeks.
