Ruth M. Piekos, 91

Jul 7, 2015

Ruth M. Piekos, 91, of South Dartmouth died Monday, July 6, at home. Born in Fall River, she was the wife of the late Felix R. Piekos and the daughter of the late John and Cecile (Antaya) Whelan.

Piekos was a cloth inspector at Arkwright Finishing in Fall River for many years before her retirement. She was a Eucharistic Minister at Saints Peter and Paul Parish at Holy Cross Church in Fall River. On numerous occasions, she enjoyed traveling to New York City with the “ladies from church.” In 2008, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting Italy and the Vatican with her family. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her granddaughter.

An avid walker, she enjoyed daily walks in Padanaram with her four legged friend, Scout. While in her 80s, Ruth participated in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, walking 13.1 miles to raise money for cancer treatment and research.

Ruth is survived by her son, Richard J. Piekos, of Swansea; a daughter, Catherine F. Russell and her husband, Michael, of Dartmouth and a granddaughter, Julia; a sister, Constance Remy, of Deltona, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Russell Whelan.

Ruth’s family would like to thank Amanda and Theresa who cared for Ruth with such dignity and compassion over the last few months.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made, in her memory, to Ruth’s former walk team, The Roadrunner Russells c/o The Jimmy Fund, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 3595 Boston, MA 02241-3595 or www.jimmyfundwalk.org/2015/TheRoadrunnerRussells
