Santa Claus talks reindeer, desserts, and football

Dec 20, 2016

With the holiday season in full-swing, the big man in the red suit has been hard to get ahold of, but at the Dartmouth Week office, we've been sitting on some hard-hitting questions for Santa Claus. In a final attempt to catch up with jolly Saint Nick, we attended a cub scout meeting at Smith Mills Church after being tipped off on his whereabouts.

After arriving to the church in a firetruck, and handing out gifts — such as Nalgene bottles and compasses — to the cub scouts and their siblings, Claus gladly took a few minutes to answer our questions, as well as offer other tidbits about himself. Here's what we found out:

What's your favorite kind of cookie?

Chocolate chip.

How much do you spend on reindeer food?

I spend $150 each week for all nine reindeer. They like carrots and oats. They are very healthy and strong.

Does it get hot in that suit?

It's very comfortable. There's no need for air conditioning. It's made of silk, so it's nice and cool, but it's very warm in the winter.

What's your second favorite holiday?

My favorite holiday is Christmas. My second favorite holiday is my friend, the rabbit, at Easter time.

What are some of the more memorable gifts that children have asked for?

One time, a little boy asked for his daddy to come back home with mom, so I told him Santa would talk to his dad.

Somebody asked for Tom Brady to bring his own special football. He wanted Tom Brady to bring it, not Santa.

How's life with Mrs. Claus?

She's been feeding me. We've had some extra meals to make sure my belly is appropriate for the season. A lot of mashed potatoes and several meats and desserts. My favorite is cannolis.

What's your favorite NFL team?

The Detroit Lions because that's the closest team to the north.
