School Committee candidate Chris Oliver
From focusing on fiscal responsibility to a successful superintendent search, incumbent Chris Oliver says he’s proud of his record after his first term nears an end on the School Committee.
“My first year, staff morale in the district was at an all time low, the budget process was in question, and, as far as I’m concerned, the trust had been lost with parents and staff alike in the administration’s ability to lead,” Oliver said.
In his three years, Oliver, 39, said he spearheaded the effort to establish a budget subcommittee. He was also proud to help bring in a strong interim superintendent that allowed the committee to concentrate on a nationwide search, which ended with the hire of Dr. Bonny Gifford.
“I’m really proud to say the superintendent search was done in the best manner possible,” he said.
Oliver, who is the board’s chairman, moved to Dartmouth with his wife 18 years ago. The couple has two daughters in the school system, one at Potter Elementary and the other at Dartmouth Middle School.
He has a background in education, serving as the director of technology and information systems for Acushnet public schools.
Oliver still has some things left on his agenda if re-elected, such as drafting a facilities master plan to address agining school buildings. In the fall, school officials hope to secure funds from the Community Preservation Committee for the plan. Also on that list is the creation of a preschool program in the north end of town.
“That would allow us to go after some of those higher needs children that would benefit from being enrolled in a preschool program,” he said.
