School Committee renews diversity subcommittee with changes

Apr 4, 2022

The Dartmouth School Committee agreed to create a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) subcommittee to replace its Equality and Diversity Subcommittee, which expired in March.

The subcommittee has been the subject of controversy because of its involvement with the School Committee’s ongoing review of the Dartmouth High Indian logo. Members of the Aquinnah Wampanoag sent a letter to the subcommittee last summer criticizing its actions.

All School Committee members spoke in support of renewing the subcommittee except John Nunes, who admitted he was “tossed” on the issue, but agreed to go along with it given the otherwise-unanimous support.

“In this climate that we’re living in, I think it’s very important that we have these conversations and that we make Dartmouth Public Schools a better place for everyone,” said committee member Chris Oliver.

Several committee members, though, raised concerns about the subcommittee’s name, charge, and composition.

After some discussion, the committee agreed that the new subcommittee would be made up of two administrators, two School Committee members, three staff members, two students, and three community members — one more than before.

The School Committee decided to postpone its discussion on the subcommittee’s charge to its next meeting to give members time to review the old mission statement as well as a proposal from Vice Chair Mary Waite for a new charge.

Once the subcommittee’s charge has been amended, the School Committee will put out a call for applications to the board.

The School Committee’s next meeting will be on April 25.
