Search for owls with the Lloyd Center

Jan 3, 2017

Owl fans, here’s your chance to see them up close. The Lloyd Center will host its annual early morning Owl Prowl on February 5 from 3:30-8 a.m.

Participants could find themselves face-to-face with several owl species that patrol Dartmouth’s skies at night, including screech, great horned and barred owls. In wintertime, these owls are busy building their nests and establishing territories, becoming more vocal in an otherwise quiet winter landscape. The Owl Prowl will be led by Lloyd Center research associate Jamie Bogart.

Once the sun rises, the search is not over. Instead, focus will shift to searching for other winter birds, such as waterfowl, raptors and possibly snow owls along the center’s coastal beach.

Those attending are asked to bring binoculars, a camera and a flashlight. Footwear suitable for light trail walking, possibly on snow, and warm clothing is recommended. The walk will be postponed in the event of stormy weather or excessive wind.

Pre-registration is required by 4 p.m. on February 3, and costs $9 for members and $12 for non-members. To pre-register, visit lloydcenter.org. For more information about the event, contact Jamie at (508) 990-0505 x23 or email jbogart@lloydcenter.org.

The Lloyd Center is located at 430 Potomska Road.
