Sixty years of high notes and harmonies
Grace Episcopal Church rang out with harmony and history Sunday afternoon, May 18 as the Greater New Bedford Choral Society celebrated its 60th anniversary with a concert that blended classical mastery, local talent and Broadway flair.
The performance, under the direction of Raymond Buttero, featured a chamber orchestra of local musicians and chorus accompanist Eric Mazonson on harpsichord and piano. This year, there are 9 Dartmouth residents in the choir.
Member Betsy Burr said the church offered a beautiful setting and “magical” sound quality for the group’s milestone event.
The first half of the program opened with George Frideric Handel’s “Coronation Anthem No. 4,” followed by Joseph Haydn’s “Te Deum.” Burr said both pieces showcased the choir’s dynamic range and cohesion, earning a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd.
After intermission, the audience was treated to a unique moment: an original composition by Buttero himself, a “hauntingly lyrical” setting of “Psalm 150.” The piece featured a moving solo by alto Allison Messier and te emotional performance earned yet another ovation.
The concert closed on a jubilant note with selections from “Oklahoma!” and “The Sound of Music,” drawing smiles, toe taps and one final burst of applause.
At the reception that followed, Burr said audience members praised the concert’s depth and variety, the caliber of the musicians and the special resonance of the venue.
"It was a perfect way to celebrate the chorus’ 60th year," she added.
