Skyla Strong: dancers, businesses raise funds to help hospitalized teen

Jan 26, 2017

Due to raffles, donations, and a scheduled performance by dancers from all over New England, community members are nearing a $25,000 fundraising goal that will help support a teen hit by a car while crossing Dartmouth Street on January 5.

Fourteen-year-old Skyla Lynk-Romano was rushed to Hasbro Trauma Center via medical helicopter after being stuck as she was leaving Dancer’s Edge studio, where she trains and performs, to meet her waiting father in the parking lot across the street. Her critical condition has improved; a hospital spokesperson listed Lynk-Romano in good condition as of January 25.

A dancer for more than a decade, Lynk-Romano joined Dancer’s Edge last July and immediately became a part of its close-knit community, said Paula Perry Szyndler, owner of the Dartmouth Street studio and I've Got Rhythm on Route 6. Peers described Lynk-Romano as a happy, friendly, and a sassy dancer, so it’s no wonder that Szyndler and friends have already raised $22,000.

Just a few days after Lynk-Romano was flown to the hospital, Szyndler started a GoFundMe page with a $25,000 goal to aid Lynk-Romano’s medical care.

“It’s for her health care and anything she might need once she’s ready to return home,” Szyndler said. Just under two weeks later, $18,000 has been raised.

Lynk-Romano’s fellow dancers were quick to step up with fundraisers of their own. After brainstorming, they decided to create T-shirts. The studio’s charity sparked even more action: Pink Box Desserts in Dartmouth ran a fundraiser, and Dartmouth Middle School student Morgan Rebello took money from her own savings account to make “Skyla Strong” bumper stickers, said Szyndler.

The fundraisers haven’t stopped, and Szyndler has no intention of slowing down.

An anonymous donor gave Szyndler tickets to an upcoming Kenny Chesney concert to raffle off in February. Steve Arsenal's Kempo Karate in New Bedford will dedicate its annual Valentine’s Day sale to her on February 11.

Carousel Family Fun Center in Fairhaven has a fundraiser scheduled for February 21. Center Stage Dance Studio in New Bedford will raffle off a donated Hatchimal, one of the hottest holiday toys.

“Everyone came together. Even people who don’t even know Skyla are supporting her,” said fellow dancer Emily Senra.

The biggest fundraiser scheduled thus far is on July 16. More than 10 studios across New England will perform at White’s of Westport for the Move With Us benefit recital. Tickets go on sale April 1.

“It’ll be the first time ever these studios have come together as one,” Szyndler said.

Support doesn’t stop with Lynk-Romano. Her father, Aaron Lynk, couldn’t be reached because he’s been at the hospital day and night. So Szyndler uses a poster on the studio’s wall to schedule dinners for Lynk.
